\u00a0You <em>must<\/em> get rid of them first and keep them out of your environment.<\/p>\n<p>As a result you will have<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>no flea eggs,<\/li>\n<li>no fleas<\/li>\n<li>and no risk of your cat developing a nasty\u00a0<a href=\"\/cat-flea-allergy\">cat flea allergy.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How To Go About Feline Flea Proofing<\/h2>\n<p>Take the time to look at this video and really understand\u00a0where fleas come from, where they live and how they behave&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"vid-margin\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gsr_NDBRc9U?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Fleas have to be controlled at the \u2018cat level\u2019 (the adult fleas) and, just as importantly, the \u2018carpet level\u2019 (eggs and larvae). \u00a0So flea proofing your home begins with the carpets and on this page I specifically cover handling\u00a0wall to wall carpet or hard floors with scatter rugs.\u00a0 And you also need to treat your bedding as this is often a favorite place for puss to relax.<\/p>\n<h4>Dealing with wall to wall carpet<\/h4>\n<p>If you have a big house or if the flea problem is severe, it could be easier and even more economical to call in the big guns of a pest control professional. \u00a0However, If you plan to do it yourself here are four essential guidelines.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0Use House foggers or bombs.\u00a0 There are many makes and models and they significantly speed up the flea proofing process. \u00a0Make sure you use enough bombs. \u00a0Those available in supermarkets often only do 1.6 Squares so you need many more of them.<\/li>\n<li>Plan to do all the carpeted areas in the one day.\u00a0 There is no need to do the bathroom and kitchen as the residual egg killing chemical will be wiped off next time you mop.<\/li>\n<li>Vacuum thoroughly first, and move all the furniture, as the eggs are under the couches and at the edges of the room where there is less traffic. \u00a0Move the cushions off the sofa so the fog goes down the back where the dust is!<\/li>\n<li>Professional Steam cleaning will get rid of eggs from carpets and upholstery.\u00a0 However, the machines for hire generally do not get hot enough to kill the eggs. \u00a0You need\u00a0to use a machine that actually <em>heats<\/em> water. \u00a0Most just produce a strong fine mist jet to dislodge dirt but has no effect on the flea habitat deep down.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>For Timber or Tile Floors<\/h4>\n<p>You may only need to use a surface spray to spot spray rugs and furniture. \u00a0These sprays are designed to be used on all the upholstered and carpeted areas where your pet goes.<\/p>\n<p>To spray most effectively, first vacuum the carpet and furniture to remove surface dust and grit.\u00a0 Then use the spray lightly (hold the bottle at waist height as you go around the edges of the room) all over the main carpeted areas. \u00a0Spray particularly down the backs of the cushions of your pet\u2019s favourite chair!!<\/p>\n<p>The surface spray prevents the flea eggs from becoming adult fleas so they don&#8217;t develop teeth to bite you or your pet. \u00a0These spray treatments usually last for about six months and will kill the new eggs that may fall off an untreated pet.<\/p>\n<p>Once your home is declared a flea free area, make sure you maintain the rage against fleas with regular <b>cat flea combing\u00a0<\/b>and other preventative treatments.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"proofingbedding\">Feline flea proofing mattresses and bedding<\/h2>\n<p>Ideally the mattress should be steam cleaned.<\/p>\n<p>Wash bedding in very hot water.
